What
is an Appropriate Adult?
Someone who attends a police station to assist and advise a
detained person who may be:
-
learning disabilities,
-
someone mentally ill and having
difficulties understanding the significance of questions put to them,
-
serious visual or aural
impairment, unable to read, unable to speak or with difficulty in oral
communication’
- and where no relative, guardian, social worker or other responsible adult
(independent of the police) is able to attend to support them
