What is an Appropriate Adult?

Someone who attends a police station to assist and advise a detained person who may be:

  • a young person (i.e. a person under 17 years of age)

  • an adult with vulnerabilities, for example

  • learning disabilities,

  • someone mentally ill and having difficulties understanding the significance of questions put to them,

  • serious visual or aural impairment, unable to read, unable to speak or with difficulty in oral communication’

  • and where no relative, guardian, social worker or other responsible adult (independent of the police) is able to attend to support them
